4th of July Celebration

Event Description

Lots to do on the 4^th of July!

The starts with the July 4th FireCracker 5000 Family Fun Run put on by San Juan Island Fitness. Contact them atwww.sanjuanislandfitness.com  or call 360-378-4449.

The San Juan Island Chamber of Commerce Parade starts at 10:30 am. Parade awards will be presented on the Main Stage at the Pig War at 1:00 pm

 

Annual Kiwanis Fourth of July Pig War Picnic on the San Juan Historical Museum Grounds on Price Street (right after the parade). Old-fashioned Fourth of July Celebration with plenty of food (BBQ pulled pork sandwiches, hot dogs, coleslaw, chips. Hot fudge sundaes and drinks also available). Lunch only $5. Beer garden with beer and wine. Musical entertainment by Mallet, Rythmatics and the One More Time Band. Activities and games, including bucket rides, a pie-eating contest, egg toss, three-legged race, cakewalk, face-painting, raffle and a bucket brigade. National Park Ranger Mike Vouri’s "Pig War" Story. Fourth of July Parade Awards at 1:00 p.m. The fun begins when the parade ends and goes until 4 pm!

 

Rock the Dock with the Timebenders! This talented group from Victoria B.C. returns thanks to the San Juan Island Rotary Club. Plan to be at the Port of Friday Harbor at 5:00 pm.

 

End the day with fantastic Fireworks at the Bay. With the support of the community the San Juan Island Chamber of Commerce organizes this show that starts at 10:00 pm.

Capt. Jim Maya got a glimpse of nature’s lighter side today and decided to share. Here’s the scoop, straight from the photographer himself:

Every now and then I’m able to capture an image that touches my heart. Below was a brief look into the lives of our orca friends. Here are a couple of huggers, a couple of brothers, sharing a tender moment. They are families and are very loving to each other. It’s their essence! Island Rec 'Know Your Island Walk

Sat. May 26, 1-4:00pm. Meet Sandy Strehlou, Town of F.H. Coordinator of Historic Preservation and Kevin Loftus, Director of San Juan Historical Museum. Take the first ever tour of Post War Architecture Friday. Also known as Recent Past Architecture; 1945-1960. Discover why these familiar and often under-appreciated buildings are considered historic and important to our heritage. The walk ends with a private tour of the more distant past at the San Juan Historical Museum with eight buildings each holding displays and exhibits. Park at the Courthouse Parking Lot and meet under the heritage black walnut tree in front of the SJC Courthouse. Length is 2.mi. RT. Terrain is sidewalk and museum grounds. Rated easy. NO DOGS, please.

6th Annual Celebration of the Orca Greeting Ceremony

Friday Harbor, Wash. - The Whale Museum's upcoming 6th Annual 'Celebration of the Orca Greeting Ceremony' fundraising dinner and auction will be held on the evening of Friday, May 4th at the Mullis Center in Friday Harbor. Just as the Orca whales come together in what are called 'greeting ceremonies,' so, too, The Whale Museum wants supporters to come together for this fun evening.

The evening will begin with happy hour & a silent auction at 6:00 p.m.; the no-host bar will include beer, wine and Sangria. San Juan Roasters is brewing the coffee. Market Chef is preparing dinner. The entrée choices include Chili Verde Pork Enchilada Casserole or Roasted Green Chili & Seared Local Greens Enchilada Casserole. Both entrees will be served with black beans, rice, Mexican cheeses, and fresh Crema as well as Market Chef's House favorite Chili Lime Slaw. After dinner, the live portion of the evening will get started with the live auction followed by a dessert auction. That's right, dessert after dinner is available in this delicious auction. Bid on delectable treats like 'Luscious Chocolate Mousse,' 'Fresh Fruit Pie,' 'Double Chocolate' cake and a dozen more. Special thanks to four businesses for sponsoring the event: Islanders Bank, Islanders Insurance, Petro San Juan, and VanderYacht Propane.

Tickets (includes dinner; wine, beer and sangria sold separately) are a great deal at $25.00 per person for members* of The Whale Museum or $35.00 per person for non-members and can be purchased at The Whale Museum (*basic annual membership investment is $25).

 An Englishman, an Irishman and an American are taken hostage in Lebanon. Stripped of their own clothes, belongings and contact with the outside world, they must rely on humour, imagination and each other to survive.
For all its harrowing subject matter, the play is also blissfully funny. It is about a great deal more than captivity at the hands of an enemy. It's also about nationality, faith and its often strained relationship with organized religion, and the amazing capacity of the human spirit to endure, to find love, hope and tenderness in even the most desperate surroundings.
